ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Color doppler U.S. imaging was used to evaluate 110 patients with suspected lower extremity venous thrombosis. They were complaining of pain, tenderness and swelling. Occlusive and non occlusive venous thrombi were detected in 52 patients [47 percent] either in external iliac, femoral, popliteal or leg veins. The veins lower limbs were examined by a combination of B-mode Duplex sonography with color flow mapping which can give very accurate information about patency of veins and their blood flow. It can visualize venous thrombi which are partially or totally occluding the venous lumen. Compressibility of the veins under pressure and augmentation of venous blood flow with muscle compression were very accurate signs about the patency of lower limb veins. Out of 52 patients with deep vein thrombosis, 6 patients had external iliac vein thrombosis, 21 patients had femoral vein thrombosis, 18 patients had popliteal vein thrombosis and 7 patients had thrombosis of leg veins. Duplex ultrasound has demonstrated its utility and efficacy in the diagnosis and follow-up of deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremity beside its availability for repeated follow up examinations

ABSTRACT

Doppler ultrasound is a useful adjunct to clinical examination for varicose veins. A simple study demonstrated that some one inexperienced in the use of the Doppler ultrasound can rapidly acquire sufficient expertise to use the instrument efficiently

ABSTRACT

Doppler flow study of the uterine artery using transvaginal sonography was done on 68 patients including 44 using IUD and 24 normal females not using any method of contraception. Both the pulsatility [PI] and resistance [RI] indices were significantly lower in patients with IUD induced bleeding as compared to those without abnormal vaginal bleeding complaint or in women not using any method of contraception. On the other hand, no significant variations in PI and RI levels were found with the duration of IUD induced bleeding or with the duration of IUD application in patients using the device. Also, no significant changes in blood flow indices were demonstrated between patients using the device and without abnormal vaginal bleeding and the control group. These preliminary results suggest that some women are more prone to develop IUD induced bleeding than others. Transvaginal Doppler study of the uterine artery may be a helpful technique to identify such group of patients

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Dopplerosonography was used to evaluate the long term function of arteriovenous fistulas created in 60 patients with chronic renal failure. The fistulas were: 16 at the cubital fossa [side to side], 44 at the distal forearm [18 side to side, 18 end to side and 8 end to end], the diameter of the brachial artery feeding the fistula, ranged between 0.5- 0.8 mm. The flow volumes were calculated, they were 480, 310, 300, 140 ml/m respectively. Follow-up these patients showed that a mean flow volume between 300- 500 ml/m is quite enough for hemodialysis and flow volume less than 200 ml is insufficient for long term hemodialysis. Doppler sonograph is a simple, rapid and cheap method, and its use during creation of arterio-venous fistula can determine its efficiency in long term hemodialysis in patients with chronic renal failure
